The age old question of color vs. black and white. Each bring out certain elements of the subject. It's not a question of what's right or wrong, there's no right or wrong here. One makes the house look more vibrant and beautiful, the other kind of makes it a little spooky. The question is, how is the angle on the house? Any recommendations on how I can make this more interesting?

I think the black and white version gives it an element of old time, as well as spookiness. If there is a way of adding red accents to the exposed brick (focal black and white), that might make it pop a little more, but without going full-out color. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteHmm I'll have to look into adding the red accents on there. That would make things more interesting. Thanks for the suggestion Natalie K..
ReplyDeleteI think both pictures have the same editing - don't they? I mean you created an HDR and converted it into b&w without any adjustments - right? I like the details level of the general mood of the b&w better although I think the skies are too intense to create a good contrast. I'd boost white, darken black and brighten up the image - just a notch. (I am doing all these things in my head, so I'm not so sure how they are doable in the reality?) I'd also try to cut the neighbour house on the left although it may not be feasible either due to its close proximity....
ReplyDeleteMichael Mossiagin, thanks for the tips. I'll have to try that. The neighbor's house was pretty close, it's a very tight block. Perhaps retaking the photo so that the left most edge of the house is even would cut that out.
ReplyDeleteI think Photoshop allows you to darken a section of the photo, so you could darken the neighbor's home and make it just look pitch black, or I guess you could cut it out completely.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to use Photoshop but I had someone black out a car that was parked next to a classic car and was taking attention away. The classic car was untouched, it was just the car to its left that was faded and darkened. Do you use Photoshop?
Natalie K., I have Photoshop Lightroom and GIMP. I haven't used GIMP fully to it's abilities. I'm sure between the two of those, I can figure out something.
ReplyDeleteIf you move in closer, drop the camera to just a few inches above ground point up as to fill the frame with just the house, or perhaps some of it? Something like that would make it more dramatic I think.
ReplyDeleteOshi Shikigami, it's 81 F here, 90% humidity, but that didn't stop me from taking your suggestion. I think I got some good stuff, will post results hopefully tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteSweet! Thanks for the kind words. And it is about the same here. I was just out in the neighborhood myself, shooting at anything, and everything. Came back soaked with sweat, but also about 90 pictures! Coming soon. :-)
