After Sunset Entertainment (Landing Bridges / Hamburg, March 2017)

After Sunset Entertainment (Landing Bridges / Hamburg, March 2017) There are obviously many places to go in Hamburg for your night entertainment. Here (pictured), at the port and the Elbe River there is "The Lion's King", the famous Disney / Broadway Musical which has been performing in Hamburg since 2001. Next to it (to the left) is a similar sized musical theater with a changing repertoire. The ferry transport across the river is included in the ticket price. Or you can get on board a ship and do a "Harbor-Lights Tour" with take-off around sunset each day throughout the year. Alternatively, you might as well want to go to Reeperbahn (which is a one stop subway ride from here), where you will find all kinds of nightly entertainment, both lighter and darker... #hamburg #nightphotography (Canon EOS 5D, f/5.6, 1/60, 300mm, ISO 1600)

Hamburg's Schanzenviertel at Night (March 2017)

Hamburg's Schanzenviertel at Night (March 2017) Following the Reeperbahn area this is Hamburg's second best known entertainment, club and restaurant district. The Schanze as the locals call it has no red light flavor, but a more left wing, anti capitalist and multi cultural atmosphere. There are many little shops that sell all kinds of things and stuff you normally would not find in big High Street retail outlets. For the evenings there are lots of restaurants and bars. During spring and summertime it is a perfect area to enjoy food, drinks and warm weather in sidewalk cafes or restaurants. It may, however, also get quite busy here during the weekends. The name of the quarter originates from a sconce (i.e. fortification, German: Schanze) formed like a star which has been built in the area in 1682 which at that time was just outside the Hamburg city walls. #hamburg #nightphotography #sternschanze #schanzenviertel (Canon EOS 5D with a Canon EF 24-105mm, f3.5-5.6 lens)

"Zum Silbersack" (Hamburg, March 2017)

"Zum Silbersack" (Hamburg, March 2017) #nightphotography #silbersack The Silbersack (silver bag) is the most iconic pub in the Reeperbahn area. It is part of every guided walking tour through this district. It is famous for its atmosphere which may be described as being quaint or cozy but definitively has a shabby element to it. And for the antique music box which plays music from the 1960ies and 70ies. During weekend nights this pub is very crowded. #nightphotography #silbersack #hamburg (Canon EOS 5D, f/5.6, 1/30, 89 mm, ISO 1600)

Hansa Square And Fountain At Night (Hamburg, March 2017)

Hansa Square And Fountain At Night (Hamburg, March 2017) #hamburg #nightphotography #hansaplatz Well, this square ("Hansaplatz") - close to the city's Central Train Station - is clearly one of the more problematic areas in Hamburg. Over years it has been a location known for drug dealing, illegal prostitution and outbursts of violence. A couple of years ago the whole area was reconstructed and cleaned. The electric lighting was enhanced and the authorities increased police presence and surveillance. But still you will find reports on violence in the local press on a regular basis. It would not appear that the situation has changed dramatically for the better. Ok - I did not in particular feel unsafe, when I shot this picture on a Friday evening in early March at around 7 pm. Not unsafe - but a bit uneasy so I made it a quick shot... By the way: The name of the square refers to the "Hanseatic League", a commercial and military confederation of European port ci...
