The Chitwood is in Lincoln County close to Eddyville and crosses the Yaquina River. It has been rebuilt a few time since 1893 and you are seeing the 1926 version. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. It is located at the north end of Newport and jets out about a mile from the main shoreline. It can easily be seen from out at sea. It actually replaced a lighthouse that is only three miles away. Recently, it received a well deserved paint job. When the Heath is in Bloom (Holm Sand-Mountains, August 2017) Canon EOS 5D It's this time of the year again. In late August the Heath in Northern Germany is starting to bloom. Now, the largest and by far best-known heath area is the Lueneburg Heath, some 50 kilometers South of Hamburg. The Holm Sand-Mountain area (in German: Holmer Sandberge) is much smaller, less known and only a 20 minutes bicycle ride from my place (which is at a Western suburb of Hamburg). It combines a relatively large area of natural sand dunes with heath and pine trees and is surrounded by a forest. The sand dunes were formed during the last ice age from the former glacial valley of the River Elbe. Large open sand dunes with "tree islands" of bizarre pine regrowth make this a unique landscape. Sand Dunes in the Forest (Holmer Sandberge, July 2017) Canon EOS 5D with a Canon EF IS STM 24-105 mm, f/3.5-5.6 lens This is a Nature Reserve Area around 15 KM West of Hamburg. The Holmer Sandberge (the 'Holm Sand Mountains') consist of sand dunes, formed during the last ice age from the former glacial valley of the River Elbe. Large open sand dune areas (within a forest) with "tree islands" of bizarre looking pines make this a unique landscape. Heaths and dry grasslands are spreading, and rare animal and plant species are finding habitats.
