Jaipur (Rajasthan / India, November 2016)

Jaipur (Rajasthan / India, November 2016) Jaipur, the capital of the North Indian state of Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, who ruled the Jaipur State from 1699-1744. Initially his capital was a rather small city called Amber (at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur). He felt the need of shifting his capital city with the increase in population and growing scarcity of water. Jaipur is the first planned city of India and the King - a man of high education and interest in science and architecture - also took a great interest while designing this city. Therefore, the Old Town which is surrounded by a wall with several gates is designed like a Roman city with squares, straight streets and avenues. But don't get me wrong here: You still can get lost very easily as the street signs are mostly in Hindu and do not carry numbers. Unfortunately, many rickshaw drivers are illiterate and do not know how to use a city map should you happen to have one. But, clearly, this is...

The Day When India Ran Out Of Cash (November 8th, 2016)

The Day When India Ran Out Of Cash (November 8th, 2016) When I was sitting on my plane flying from Frankfurt to Delhi the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an unscheduled TV address gave only four hours' notice that virtually all the cash in the world's seventh-largest economy would be worthless, effective by midnight. By that time the 500 ($7.30; £6; €7) and 1,000 rupee notes would no longer be legal tender. People were told they could deposit or change their old notes in banks until 30 December and new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes would be issued. Why? The decision was taken to crack down on corruption and illegal cash holdings known as "black money". In an attempt to curb tax evasion, the government expects to bring billions of dollars of unaccounted cash into the economy because the banned bills make up more than 80% of the currency in circulation. Some 90% of all economic transactions in India are in cash. Upon my arrival at the Delhi airport all ATMs, curr...
