Yes, that could do it. Up in the upper atmosphere, it gets quite a lot colder. And the tiny ice crystals form, and stay in the air. Diffusing the sunlight. Even on a clear day! :-)

Looks to be an ice crystal ring around the sun? Was the air very cool at that time?
