Hello all

Hello all,

I don't know about you but I'm a bit of rebel when it comes to the status quo. Especially when it comes to photographic tools, case in point is my preferred RAW conversion tool. I currently use Capture One Pro from Phase One and I actually cut my teeth on their offering when I first became a user of digital tools.

I had a stint with Lightroom for a while when they started releasing local adjustment options but when CC came around I refused to get onto the bandwagon. Phase One in the mean time put in a lot of work on their local adjustment options and their rendering of the files straight out of the camera in my opinion are superior. I returned to the solution about a year ago and I am very happy.

Make no mistake, it is not a cheap option and it lacks some level of functionality in one's workflow because a lot of the plugins out there are written specifically for the Adobe environment. But for me the tools work brilliantly and I tend to be much happier with the results that come out of it once I'm done with an image. There are workarounds for workflow if you take some time with the setup.

The best tool of all is the color balance tool, it's brilliant and works a treat. So well, that I actually find myself skipping the white balance tool altogether and heading straight for this option whenever I can.

  1. What I do, with Lightroom, to achieve much the same split of coloration highlight med and dark, is to use the "Duotone" settings and place a small factor of change for the high and low, effectively giving them an offset. Not as elegant as Capture One, but at least a workaround.

  2. I've nor really spent any time there before apart from doing split toning my B&W images.
