There was some land behind the house of my sister's mother-in-law's house, in Hinesville, Georgia near Savannah that looked just like this except with the 'Palmettes', I think they called them. And I went walking through those woods on a trail,.. and on that trail was a pile of old rotten wood. I saw a black snake about 5 feet long, coming from the woods and went into that pile of wood. There may have been a lot of black snakes in that pile. Those are the snakes that will chase you and wrap itself around your leg and whip you with it's tail, which is where they get their name, here in Alabama, called a "Coach Whip" , which is also called a "Black Runner". Susan and I saw one when it came out from under her Dad's front porch in Florida, and Susan began to run and the snake began to quickly chase after her, but we were holding hands, and I pulled her back from running, to a stand still and the snake stopped and slowly went back to the porch and went back up under it..lol. Never run from a black snake ! .lol.:-) My uncle Bill had one to run and catch up with him, wrapping around his leg and began whipping him with his tail, at which he took a pocket knife out of his pocket and cut him off his leg. :-)) Anyways,..nuff on that. :-))
I have had black snakes and rat snakes around my place. I am happy to have them! They are very effective in keeping rats, and mice in check. SO I respect them, and let them have free passage...
The one that you're referring to , is the black "King Snake". They call him that because he eats other snakes and rodents like you said, and they are harmless to people..very good to have around, and so is rat snakes. :-)
