A Bar on Grosse Freiheit (St. Pauli / Hamburg, April 2016)
The advertisement to the right of the entrance (which is actually a back door) shows Hans Albers (1898 - 1960), a German movie star and singer. He had the heydays of his career between 1930 and 1945 but his songs are still quite popular, in particular in Hamburg.
Many of these songs were humorous tales of drunken, womanizing sailors on shore-leave. They were often peppered with expressions in 'Low German', the dialect which is spoken in Northern Germany. His most famous song by far is "Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins", (On Reeperbahn at Half Past Midnight) which has become one of the best known songs about Hamburg and an unofficial anthem of the colourful neighbourhood of St. Pauli.
