Sand Dunes in the Forest (Holmer Sandberge, July 2017)
Canon EOS 5D with a Canon EF IS STM 24-105 mm, f/3.5-5.6 lens
This is a Nature Reserve Area around 15 KM West of Hamburg.
The Holmer Sandberge (the 'Holm Sand Mountains') consist of sand dunes, formed during the last ice age from the former glacial valley of the River Elbe.
Large open sand dune areas (within a forest) with "tree islands" of bizarre looking pines make this a unique landscape. Heaths and dry grasslands are spreading, and rare animal and plant species are finding habitats. The Holmer Sandberge are largely used as a recreational area for the surrounding area.
