Hello Everyone. I just spent an HOUR going through some pending requests to join our community.... I rejected most of them with just a few exceptions. The problem is: there is still a long list of the requests queued up.... May I ask moderators to spent 10-15 minutes if possible to sort out potential members....
I guess our goal is to filter out the spammers.... I followed example of Pauli PPariah , quickly checking profiles of the candidates and equally quickly rejecting all those, who did not show a slightest interest in photography. Most of the profiles have not content anyways. Of course, there is a risk of rejecting somebody with a genuine interest in photography.... I'm not sure what is the best way to deal with this situation. Please advise.
Regards,
Mike M

Michael Mossiagin and moderators: if it's any help we have the following guidelines in a community I moderate:
ReplyDelete* Bluehead - reject;
* No posts - reject;
* Inappropriate collections/communities - reject.
It certainly speeds up the processing and gives you the best chance of getting genuine members. In my opinion: those who don't post at least a little of their own work before asking to join aren't the sort of members you want in Dilettante Photography anyway.
The charlatans are out in force at the moment. I hope that between all community owners and moderators we can make G+ a place not worth invading.
BTW: our reject rate is about 99.5%. That's how many time wasters are out there.
ReplyDeleteWhat Tony Tulloch said. I've got to the point where it's " can't be bothered putting up a profile pic, reject". Makes the process a little quicker. I think I've accepted 3 out of over 200 so far
ReplyDeleteAnother photo group has pinned a statement, so anybody checking into the community will see it easy. They have up to a hundred or so requests a day! And naturally, 99+% are spammers. They simply say, if you are actually interested in joining, choose one of the administrators, and send them a written request. Stating your interest, and adding at least one photo of yours, to show you actually do photography. That was months ago. Since then, I got two e-mails, both of which were legitimate. Every once in a while someone will simply delete the non-complaint applications. No complaints noted yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteDone my hour tonight, accepted one! Yippee. Still I do enjoy banning the real estate agents, & the religious zealots of whatever persuasion. Plentt of applications left if someone wants 30 minutes of mundane chores
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone! All you suggestions and help are great. I will try coming up with a message we may post for the "new comers" ....
ReplyDeleteI just finished processing all the remaining requests, approved 3 out of 30 or so.
ReplyDeleteI am here every few days... and look at the spam folder too. No idea how to stop that machine troll? gmail is on my mobile phone too and that noise is annoying at best.
ReplyDeletei approved none of the request today out of more than 20.... Evidently we are not the only community suffering from spam... I hope G+ will do something to address this issue soon.
ReplyDeleteAMEN!
ReplyDeleteAnd on the subject of Google problems, I have NOT been able to post ANY pictures for a couple of days. So if you wonder why I am 'not posting,' it is because of this...
Did another 20, there are a new lot if anyone has the time
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone remember banning Guido Billstein? He is in my G+ circles & a FB friend, a competent photographer, yet I am unable to invite him because he is "not allowed to be a member". Please be careful, when rejecting membership applications, to only ban those who are obviously selling stuff or inappropriate, since a "ban member" lasts for ever
ReplyDeletePauli PPariah nothing lasts forever ;-) I discovered the trick to unlock him and sent him an invitation.
ReplyDeleteThe trick: open the user list, change filter to 'banned', search for the name and unban.
Robert Glöckner Many thanks, I shall have to explore. Thanks for sending the invitation, appreciated
