Some people claim that a photo should be made in the camera only.

Some people claim that a photo should be made in the camera only. You should never edit it. Leave it as it is. That if you expose it correctly, you will have no need of editing.

This is a "before and after" of the same shot. Does the before need only a "different exposure" to make it better?

I did a lot in Lightroom to get the result posted here. Nearly everything except "painting" was done. Local adjustments of contrast, color and brightness. Selective color intensifying or not, brightening or not. And so on...

To each his own. There is NO "right or wrong", only what works for you. But personally, I like the 'after' shot better, and think it even looks "more natural'.

DO YOU?

  1. The after shot looks great, with better contrast and light, with the outside looking clear and fab too. And I think it looks true to life. The first one really doesn't look true to life, because in reality you can see outside.

  2. Exactly Matthew Woodall! What is more "True"? The camera's interpretation, bound by it's inabilities to reproduce, what the eye/brain combo "sees"? Or an 'adjusted image', that is far more "true" to ones recollection of the visual scene?

    Which is REAL ???

Again, believe and practice, what you wish... I am not the only Right, and You are not 'wrong'.  :-)

  3. I have heard this argument a lot. My thoughts are that it is no different than film. If you developed your own film, you would absolutely adjust the exposure, highlight levels, black and white levels, etc. To say you should only accept what the camera gives you is to say Ansel Adams should have never done HDR shots, he should have just stuck with whatever the local drug store gave him when he turned in his film...

  4. Interesting...
well i have no Lightroom, what i do sometimes is just cropping, contrast and sharpen details a bit if necessary, but only for few minutes. I really try to put my settings good, so that i don't have to do any edition works after (don't like to waste so much time for that). Especially "out of windows" pictures are difficult when the light outside is very bright. If i am not sure about the manual settings, i take more than one photo with different settings, that's the way i learn.

  5. Naturpunkt by Gina M. Adobe CC is the best $9.95 a month I spend! Access to LR, PS and few other products.
