I took my new (but actually very old) Canon 5D for a ride on Wednesday...
Here some sample shots with two lens: 28 mm f/2.8 and 50 mm f/1.8 - both pretty old as well.

A little LCD screen does not really allow to judge about the quality of the images during shooting... but the images turned out to be pretty sharp. Actually portraits , even taken with the widest possible aperture needed "softening" in post processing.

I set the camera mode to "neutral" - intending to add some saturation in post processing but I actually liked the "out of the box" colors for most parts.

I have big hands and the camera feels more natural in them than the small Canon 550D body I used to. It is heavier though.

I faced a challenge transferring the RAW files later to the PC... It is very difficult to find the necessary drivers for such an old camera to work with Windows 10 64 bit. After some research I found that turning the transferring mode to "Printing" in the camera makes the camera storage available for the computer (no additional drivers were required! ) . The LR could not transfer the files automatically and I needed to copy them first to the PC.

I find big pixels of 5D much better for ISO values 100 - 1600 in comparison to 550D. The images have significantly less noise. On the "bad" side, ISO 1600 is the maximum for this camera (this value can be extended up to 3200 in the Custom Functions Setting) but I'm yet to test it in such darkness.

I recently bought Tamron SP 70-300 on ebay for surprisingly low price (less than a 100 bucks)... I am looking forward to give it a test.

Cheers!

  1. Why use the camera to transfer images to the computer? I would think having a card reader for the computer would let you dump them all at once that way? It is the way Ido anyway, and works fast and easy. :-)

  2. My Canon 5D is my favourite ever. I use a card reader & Picasa to import my photos, all RAW, usually about 250 in a batch. Only ever have a problem if the free disk space is under 100Gb

  3. Oshi Shikigami at the moment I only have card reader for sd and micro SD cards, Canon 5d uses comact flash... I ordered an adapter but it hasn't arrived yet :(

  4. Pauli PPariah what lenses are you using with it? What is your favorite ( if any )? Strange enough Lightroom does not have a correction profile for EF 28 f/2.8...

  5. Michael Mossiagin I have only an L series 28-105mm, which I love (superb for flowers & leaves), and a 75-300mm Canon EOS, which I use most ((birds birds birds). I do have a 150-500mm Sigma, which was great until I dropped it. Now requires Manual Focus, which is not easy at those focal lengths. Haven't graduated to Lightroom yet, despite having it for over 2 years, just do basic processing in Picasa.
I should add that the 5D Mk III has 2 card slots, one for an SD card.

  6. Pauli PPariah thank you. I heard Canon 75-300 frequently gives relatively soft results (I did not use it myself, until recently my telephoto was Canon EFS-55-250 mk 2, which I did not love at all). I will publish some shots with Tamron SP 70-300 when I get it, will try to take some birds shots as well. L 28-105 must be a fantastic and very versatile lens. Unfortunately it is definitely out of my price range as well as Canon 5D mk 3 (my camera is the "classic" Canon 5d mk 1) As I mentioned earlier I forcibly changed my zooms to inexpensive prime lenses in an attempt to push myself to composing my images more thoughtfully.
