A Night at the "Hamburg Dom" (1) - March 2017
It's this time of the year again. Northern Germany's biggest fun fair event, the Hamburg Dom has opened last weekend and will continue until the end of the third week in April.
The event takes place three times a year (spring, summer and late autumn /early winter) for around 30 days each time. It is located on Heiligengeistfeld (i.e. 'field of the holy spirit'), near the St. Pauli and Reeperbahn area.
So, if you like giant wheels, roller coasters, bumper cars, carousels and so on and happen to be in Hamburg it is a great idea to go there have some fun.
The name goes back to a market / trade fair in or in front of Hamburg's Cathedral (German: Hamburger Dom) which was first recorded in 1329, at the beginning only in special seasons like Christmas. With the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century the fair was also held at other times.
After the demolition of the cathedral (1804–1807), the market for some time was held at a different location (Gänsemarkt, Engl. geese market), but kept the name “Dom”. Since 1892, the fair has been held at Heiligengeistfeld and the name was used for all fairs at this location. Over time the former trade fair changed into a fun fair event which attracts several million visitors each year.
